Get to know the students who make up the NC State Entrepreneurship Initiative (EI)! In 2014, we saw a strong increase in student membership and a strong list of incorporated business being spun out of the Garage. Let’s take a look at what is currently happening with the members of the EI!
With more than 60 new members in just the past couple of months, the EI is growing rapidly. Currently the program has 569 members with 463 students receiving access to the Garage, a 132 percent increase in membership in only one year. Students are also getting more involved and are using the Garage (our prototyping and business creation space) more often. Members are taking advantage of all of the Garage equipment such as the 3d printers, laser cutters, and power tools. We’re also excited to announce that EI members now represent all twelve academic colleges here at NC State!
The EI takes an interdisciplinary approach to entrepreneurship, with members studying in a variety of different fields. However – they all have one thing in common: a passion for entrepreneurship! In a recent survey, 55 percent of members indicated that they have started their own venture or plan to start their own venture within the next five years. Not all members want to create their own startups but that does not mean that they cannot benefit from the EI. Large companies look to hire “intrapreneurs” and the EI can help you develop the critical and creative thinking skills that companies look for in hiring new talent.
See what our students are saying about the EI:
My favorite part about being in the Entrepreneurship Initiative are the brilliantly creative and hardworking people I get to work alongside with each week. The EI culture is unlike any other on campus, it is innovative, curiosity-driven, and above all, it is contagious. – Bissan Barghouti, Senior in International Studies
The environment and the energy from sharing ideas and feedback between everyone in the EI is unlike anything else I have ever experienced. – Aaron Daeke, Senior in Mechanical Engineering
With 14 incorporated startups in the last year (and even more working towards incorporation), the EI has helped NC State students turn their ideas into real products and real companies. The following companies were incorporated within the last year, and reflect the wide variety of ventures coming out of the program:
- Pennies for Progress, Inc.
- Freshspire, Inc.
- yomnom, Inc.
- Hack and Smash Technologies, LCC
- Shep Bryan Designs, LLC
